I enjoy all these more than I did this album. For a more contemporary flavor, try Jars of Clay's Jars of Clay - Redemption Songs. If this is your style and you like the old time hymns, you will love this album.If you want hymn arrangements that are not country, consider Fernando Ortega's Hymns of Worship, Hymns & Meditations, or The Shadow of Your Wings: Hymns and Sacred Songs.
The style didn't grab me, so it was only 3 stars for me.I love when artists take traditional hymns and give them a different sound so they sound fresh and new but still familiar. As a matter of personal taste, those styles are OK but not something I want to listen to regularly.Millard chose hymns that are particularly suited to the arrangements he created for them. For the quality of the arrangements, I'd have to give this 5 stars and it would be 5 stars for anyone who likes the musical style.
Some of the arrangements are in the country style, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" has New Orleans jazz flair, some are a combination of country and Southern gospel and at least one has some big band flavor mixed in with the country and Southern gospel.I recommend that you listen to the samples to make sure you enjoy the musical style. Bart Millard has done so very skillfully and if I liked the particular genre of his arrangements, I would love this album.
My father would have adored it because he enjoyed country music and loved Southern gospel music.
But Bart Millard raised the bar and totally brought in a new feel, a new style, and some great songs. It is refreshing because worship music can tend to sound the same as every other worship album, which isn't horrible, I still love it. I recommend this album to everyone that asks me what my favorite hymn albums are. To be honest the first Hymned album did not impress me too much as I compared it to other bluegrass/country/hymn music. But this is like you are walking around in New Orleans worshiping the Lord with a full jazz/bluegrass/southern band backing you up (I don't know how to describe it any better than that).
It is so uplifting to me. I really enjoy this tape of Bart Millard.
Powerful stuff. One song never fails to bring me to tears. This album is a marvelous combination of foundational classics and modern sound. These arrangements will be appreciated young and old alike.
Wether you are young or old you will find this cd enjoyable and fun to sing along to. This is a wonderful cd that puts a new spin on some great old classic hymns.
